 | 09:16 am - Missed Batsday
Since we moved to Seattle, we missed Batsday this year. It was the 10 year anniversary, and promised to be a lot of fun. Perhaps we’ll make it down next year.

 | 11:44 am - Funny bumper stickers and the person driving the car
So last night I went out to pickup a late night snack, something warm since I’d been feeling sick for the past couple of days. There was a longer line than usual at 10 PM. I was irritated, but found the car infront of me to be quite amuzing. The car was a run down blue Ford Thunderbird, a later year than the one my wife and I burned up (literally) on prom night. There was a bumper sticker on the back of this car that read: “Wonder if you could drive any better if that CAR PHONE was shoved UP YOUR ASS!” My first thought was, “Car phone? Man that’s dated.” Then I look up at the driver, and HE’S TALKING ON A CELLPHONE!! BWAHAHHAHHAHA – so I had to wonder, did he ever have a car phone shoved up his ass?

 | 01:26 pm - Concerning ideas and dreams I've had a lot of ideas and dreams, but my problem has always been starting on and making something of them. Here's a fantastic quote for people just like me:

 | 01:54 pm - Art final - self expression piece This one took a lot of planning. I'm fairly pleased with the result, since it was pretty much a rush 6 hour job.
It's graphite and ink, three color (black, white, red), mounted on foam board that's been customized for the piece. I'm turning it in tonight.

 | 08:09 am - Crow and the Pumpkin Patch pics As promised, here are the pics of one of my latest pieces, "Crow and the Pumpkin Patch." The idea is that this is a mystical white crow, and hence is not threatening to the small (in comparision) people in the piece. (click for a bigger version)

The purpose of this piece was to explore scale, the golden mean, and texture. I used scale as a fantasy proportion between the white crow and his environment. The texture is also on his feathers and legs, and implied on the trees. The golden mean is there, measured out, from the path to the crow's head, to the end of the crow's tail. There is also a visual line between the crow and the people.
What I would change - this piece was made on foam core, WHICH SUCKS. Foam core is so smooth that it's almost impossible for color pencil to leave a mark. Markers end up chewing the foam core up, and graphite (while it marks wonderfully) doesn't erase from the board. So why did I choose foam core? The professor told us to use something sturdy, something that wouldn't flop under the pressure from the textured items. Next time I'll just buy a canvas. I would have liked to added more details to the actual pumpkin patch too. And a classmate suggested during the critique that the crow, as magnificent as he is, just doesn't stand out enough and I should have added a higher contrast with a darker shadow. I don't know if that's really the way to go, but not a bad suggestion at all.

 | 01:39 am - Another finished piece I just finished my latest artwork, and it's 1:30 AM. I've spent a total of 15 hours on the piece, and it's been a love/hate relationship with the work. I'm very pleased with the end result, and glad that I can call this one done.
Pic to come soon, I have to turn this one in for a critique Wednesday night.

 | 03:12 pm - TEXAS - the state of evil There are many many reasons that I don't like Texas, but this one comes out on top. The governor, Rick Perry, said non-Christians will be condemned to hell. "In my faith, that's what it says, and I'm a believer of that."
Wow.
So much for separation of church and state, huh?
You too can read the slew of shit here: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/elections/2006/governor/stories/110606dnTSWperry.351c57c.html

 | 03:09 pm - N. Texas school switches from textbooks to ebooks A school in N. Texas is doing away with traditional textbooks and switching to ebooks instead.
Check out this story: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/education/stories/110406dnmetebooks.3255a88.html
I certainly do have mixed feelings about this. Ebooks are way better for the tree population, which I feel very strongly about. On the other hand, this requires that every student have a computer. That just wouldn't fly where I live. There are more than 100 families with children at my son's school that can barely buy food, let alone a computer with online access. This is why they have a money drive to feel them for Thanksgiving every year (yeah, it should be more often than once a year on a holiday that Native Americans hate, but it's something which is better than nothing.)
I do think that the change would be excellent for colleges. You can't get through college without a computer anymore anyways. Oh how Barnes and Noble would be upset (unless they control ebook distribution to colleges too)

 | 09:38 am - USKA California Championships So we went to the USKA California Championships on Saturday. My eight year old, Jared, competed in 8-9 yr old Intermediate Forms and Sparring. He's been working really hard to prepare for this tournament, and it really paid off. He received 2nd place in Forms, and is once again invited to the Nationals in Alberquerque. He had a little trouble in sparring, mostly because he's a full head shorter than the rest of the kids he was competing against. We're extremely proud of him.

 | 01:43 pm - Crow and the Pumpkin Patch
Here's a sketch (one of a few) for my new project: Crow and the Pumpkin Patch.
In this project, I'm supposed to incorporate large and small scale/proportion with textile textures.
I love the idea of a giant crow landing in a pumpkin patch to eat pumpkins. You can see there is a man and his child standing on the road next to the patch, both in awe of the beast before them. Current Mood: creative

 | 12:20 am - Deady-The Candy's Mine Just completed my entry for the October Voltaire inspired piece contest - Halloween theme. I spent about 5 hours on this one, and it was a rush job at that. I actually finished it a couple of minutes too late, so hopefully it's still going to be accepted. And.. hopefully some other people enter the dang contest this time! I love looking at other people's artwork, not just my own. :)
